15th February 2010: Pencil Sketching - Cicadas
We tried something new in our classroom. We have just had a short-throw projector installed in the classroom so we are trialling different ways of using it so as to support children's learning.

One of the children brought in some cicada skins which were perfect for using in our pencil sketching art unit. We took a close up photo of the cicada skin and projected it up onto the screen so we could see all of the fine details of the skin. The children compared the view of the cicada on the screen against what they could see in the little cicada skin they held. We could see little hairs on the outside skin only in the close up photo. The artwork the children (who are 5 and 6 years old) produced was excellent! They captured so much more of the small details in the cicada skin compared to what would usually be drawn / sketched. If you would like to provide us with some feedback about our art, please click on the 'discussion' page above. Thanks.
